What is a postpartum doula? What does she do? And why do I need her?

I had never heard the term postpartum doula, until I had children of my own. Postpartum doulas provide emotional and educational support to mothers during the first weeks (or even months) after having their babies. Their services include a wide range of services, such as newborn care, breastfeeding support, information etc. There is some evidence that postpartum doula support can increase breastfeeding and decrease postpartum depression.

(Un)happy times?

When I started looking for photos of postpartum moms on the internet, the vast majority of the results I got were desperate, tired, unhappy, overwhelmed moms, with babies in their arms.

Why is that? Why does the world perceive the postpartum period in a woman’s life as an unhappy, troubled period?

It is true that the beginning of the motherhood journey is a very special and unique period with changes and challenges that one has probably never thought of before! Mothering days at the beginning seem to be long, endless. Still, I believe that moms during postpartum should thrive, not survive! I believe that new moms should be celebrated, supported, understood!

It is my mission to do all that: support you as a new mom in the beginning of your journey into motherhood, offer you information, tools and knowledge that are based on research and that will empower you!  But most importantly to be there with an open heart, with love and care and always without judgement.

It takes a village

I come from a culture where women of previous generations were giving birth surrounded by other women of their “village”, where they were given time, space and protection after having their babies.

In our modern, western society, everything has to move fast. What if we took a break and took a look at the wisdom of the women of the past and that of more traditional cultures?

What if we approach postpartum with new eyes? What if we combine the wisdom of the previous generations with the right resources that are available now?
